Middle School Library: Why Use Databases

Use this guide to access the library catalogue, databases and support for any research project.

A database contains information.

Use a database to find scholarly and quality information.

A database is NOT the same as a website!

The Internet has a lot of information. It can be difficult to find articles and good information. That's where databases can help! In fact, there are good reasons to use databases instead of searching the Web:

  • Databases are usually good, fast and full of useful information.

  • Many articles in databases are "peer-reviewed" - this means experts approved the articles.

  • Databases can save you money! Many articles on the web cost money.

  • Databases let you search and browse by topic, date, author, reading level and other fields.

If you need to do some serious research, databases are the right choice.

The library also offers free access to complete encyclopedias in electronic form. All reference materials can be accessed online from home.

Please inquire in the library if you need assistance with any of the databases or email Ms. Mandy  amanda.gintaut@gemsdaa.net

Where Can I Find the Databases?

Databases can be found using the link HERE. There is also a tab at the top of this page called Databases. There you will find a list of the online databases and resources the school subscribes to. Some of the databases will need a username and password if this is the case use the details inside the parenthesis. Some of our resources are already linked to your Google accounts. In this case, log in using your account. Other resources are school-wide so use the password provided. How will you know which one is linked - usually the ones with no username/password are linked.
